NHS backlog grows as one in eight currently on hospital waiting list
The backlog in hospital treatment in England is continuing to grow, with nearly one in eight patients now waiting for operations or other types of treatment.
The newly-released data from NHS England shows there were a record number of 6.84m people on the waiting list at the end of July. Before the pandemic, there were 4.2m waiting for treatment.
Although there were slight improvements in emergency care with A&E and ambulance waits decreasing, both services are still a long way from meeting their targets.
Nearly three in ten people waited longer than four hours in A&E in August, while ambulance crews continue to struggle to respond to 999 calls within their target times.
These latest figures illustrate the scale of challenge facing new prime minister Liz Truss and health secretary Therese Coffey. Ms Truss has made a pledge to put the NHS on a “firm footing” and the government is expected to unveil a plan for the health service next week.
