Breath test could help predict stomach cancer risk
A study has shown that risks of people with stomach problems going on to develop stomach cancer could be identified through a simple breath test, by detecting chemical compounds.
Although further work will be required to validate the test before it is ready to use in clinics, experts say that if the benefits are proven in mainstream trials, it could identify patients who are on the brink of cancer so that they can receive earlier treatment.
Over 7,000 people are affected by stomach cancer in the UK each year. It is often diagnosed late, partly because symptoms, such as pain and indigestion, can be mistaken for other conditions, which means that chances of survival are often poor.
The new breath test may lead to earlier detection and an improvement in prognosis.
The test works on the theory that people with cancer may have their own unique breath signatures, which contain chemical compounds that are not contained in the breath of people who are free from the illness.
Dr Emma Smith of Cancer Research UK, said “Diagnosing cancer in its early stages offers patients the best chance of successful treatment, so research like this has potential to save lives.
“But we would need to be sure the test is sensitive and accurate enough to be used more widely.”
Research is currently underway, which involves thousands of European patients.
