Cancer survival in England lagging behind other countries
A study published in the British Journal of Cancer has suggested that the track record for cancer survival in England is lagging behind other countries with comparable health systems.
The researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine studied survival rates for breast, lung, rectal, colon, ovarian and stomach cancers, comparing them to information from Sweden, Norway, Canada, Denmark and Australia.
Although they found that there have been some improvements across the board, the five year survival rate for these cancers was lower than Canada, Norway, Sweden and Australia.
The researchers suggested that the poorer survival rate could be down to late diagnoses, substandard access to treatment and limited investment in health systems, although they also pointed out that the speed of improvement in some cases was faster in England than elsewhere
One of the lead authors of the study, Dr Michel Coleman, said “The survival statistics are measures of the overall effectiveness of health systems – not whether doctors for example are good or bad.”
Sara Hiom from Cancer Research UK, said “Not only is England struggling to excel on an international level – there is also too much variation across the country in the speed with which patients are diagnosed and whether they can get the treatments they need.”
