CQC says NHS faces “precarious” future
The annual report by the Care Quality Commission has raised concerns about rising demand and staff shortages, adding that the NHS is “straining at the seams” and that whilst the quality of the NHS had so far been maintained, standards were likely to drop.
The report was published following an inspection regime of hospitals, and concerns highlighted included staff shortages and bed shortages with higher than recommended occupancy levels.
Sir David Behan, chief executive of the CHC, said that although the quality of care was currently being maintained, rising pressures meant there was a real danger that this may not continue.
“We are going to see a fall in the quality of services that are offered to people and that may mean that the safety of some people is compromised” he said.
He added that the NHS was “struggling to cope with 21st Century problems”, with increasing patients with conditions linked to unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
“We are living longer but are not living healthier, so I think what we are signalling is that the system now and into the future has got to deal with those increased numbers of older people who are going to have more than one condition.”
