Husband ordered to pay Ex-Wife £453m divorce settlement
A recent case in the High Court has seen one of the largest UK divorce settlements ordered with a Russian billionaire husband being ordered to pay his wife £453m.
Although the couple’s identity was not revealed it appears that they met in Russia and now reside in the UK. Whilst the wife had been the homemaker, raising their two children, the husband claimed to have made a ‘special contribution’ to their wealth which culminated in him selling his shares in a Russian company for around £1bn. Notwithstanding this Mr Justice Haddon-Cave considered their contributions to be equal awarding the wife what is reported to be 41.5% of the marital assets.
This case further recognises the fact that the roles of breadwinner and homemaker continue to be considered equal within a marriage but also calls into question the validity of a ‘special contribution’ argument, particularly given the level of assets.
