January – The Month of The Divorce
For many News Solicitors, January is traditionally the busiest month of the year with firms seeing record numbers of clients seeking advice about divorce and separation.
So what is it about January that makes it a popular month for people to contact Divorce Solicitors? Well potentially they are a number of reasons. Flirtations at the office Christmas party can generate suspicion and accusations which for some firmly place ‘Divorce’ on the New Year ‘To Do’ list. The run up to the festivities and the holidays themselves can be stressful for many. But for some couples, it is the simple act of spending time together over Christmas (particularly where disappointing presents and alcohol are concerned) which places what is already a fragile relationship under even more strain.
It can also be the case that some people may have decided to end their relationship well in advance of the New Year but have put off taking any advice for the sake of their family.
In recent years, despite the recession, January has still proved a popular month to take steps to formally end a relationship. However, improvements in the economy now make Divorce and Separation a far more realistic prospect for those in unhappy relationships who put it off during the height of recession when there was limited job security and difficulties with the housing market.
For those whose relationship is at an end, it is important that they immediately seek specialist legal advice from a Family Law Solicitor. The first issue for many is deciding how to continue to share the care and responsibility of their children. It is also helpful to think about how to address a child’s emotional needs during the separation, taking into account the possibility that there may now be one parent living away from the family home.
Another urgent priority is financial security, both in the short term and also in the future. It’s also important to think about practical living arrangements where you both have to remain in the same home until your case is finalised.
