Patients are facing an eight month wait for hip operations
Figures obtained through Freedom of Information requests have revealed that patients are having to wait for more than eight months for hip and knee replacements, and waiting times have risen by 40 per cent in the last four years.
Some health care trusts have resorted to only referring patients for surgery if they are unable to sleep at night, can only walk a few feet, or are constantly taking painkillers.
The Royal College of Surgeons’ Ian Eardley, said “With an ageing population, more and more people require surgery to replace hips and knees.
“Hip and knee replacements are some of the most cost-effective procedures available. It is unacceptable that so many people are having to wait so long.”
Age UK’s Caroline Abrahams, said “It is extremely worrying that older people are being forced to wait so long for operations that can make a life-changing difference. Delaying treatments can cause huge physical and emotional distress.
“It is absolutely essential that older people who need operations are able to get them within a reasonable timescale.”
