RCN reports on worst ever conditions within the NHS
The Royal College of Nursing has said that nurses have reported that current NHS conditions are the worst they have experienced.
Janet Davies, the RCN’s chief executive, said that frontline nurses had informed her that, whilst they wanted to provide patients with the best care, they had been told to discharge them before they were fit to be discharged in order to free up beds.
This has come at the same time that a letter from the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) has warned the prime minister that mounting pressures on the NHS are putting patient lives at risk, and called for urgent investment to assist “over-full hospitals with too few qualified staff”.
The RCPs president Prof Jane Dacre, said “Our members tell me it is the worst it has ever been in terms of patients coming in during a 24-hour period and numbers of patients coming in when there are no beds to put them in.
“And there are patients within the hospital who can no longer get home because of the difficulties there are in placing people in social care.
“Our members fear that patients’ lives are at risk because they can’t get round to see patients who aren’t in the emergency and accident department or are waiting for results to come back.”
