Troubled cardiac unit deaths to be reviewed
A review into the deaths of up to 250 patients who died following cardiac surgery at St George’s Hospital in Tooting between April 2013 and September 2018 is to take place, commissioned by NHS Improvement.
It was revealed last year that a ‘toxic’ row had contributed to a higher than average mortality rate at the cardiac unit of the hospital, which led to a halt on complex heart operations.
The review is to be carried out by a panel of independent cardiology, anaesthetic and cardiac surgery consultants, who will examine the quality of care and safety of patients who died during or after heart surgery received during the review period.
In addition to the period under review, the time between April 2017 and September 2018 will also be studied to determine the outcome following measures taken to improve services.
It is expected that between 200 and 250 deaths related to the cardiac unit at the hospital will be looked into and the review is expected to take between six and twelve months to complete.
The hospital’s chief executive Jacqueline Totterdell, said it was “absolutely essential that patients and their families have full confidence in the care of our cardiac surgery team” and the review “will be a key part of that process.”
