Two West Yorkshire regions amongst areas in England most at risk of failing healthcare
Data collected from the Office for National Statistics and the NHS has highlighted the areas in England where lives could be at risk due to a struggling NHS.
The 32 ‘risk zones’ have been identified as regions where people are 29 per cent more likely to die of avoidable causes, predominantly caused by harsh funding cuts and unprecedented pressure on the NHS, than in other local authority areas.
Two West Yorkshire regions, Bradford and Kirklees, are included in the list of hotspots.
Chair of the Government’s Health and Social Care Select Committee, Dr Sarah Wollaston MP, said “This analysis sets out in stark detail the urgent need to plan not just for the scale of future need, but to address the impact of current deficits on care.”
The research suggests that a 10 per cent increase in funding could reduce A&E waiting times enough to bring them in line with national targets of 95 per cent of patients being seen within four hours. The same boost would improve cancer treatment performance and increase the number of patients being referred for routine operations within 18 months.
