Number of patients hospitalised with flu in England rises by more than 40% in one week
Public Health England has reported that flu hospital admissions in England have risen by more than 40 per cent in one week.
In their latest report on the number of cases, PHE stated that there were 472 confirmed hospitalised influenza cases in the week up to 8th December, which is up from 330 cases the previous week.
The report went on to say that flu activity is at ‘moderate’ intensity and confirmed that there had been eight flu-related deaths this week in the UK.
“The impact of flu on healthcare services is moderate intensity levels for hospitalisations and above baseline for intensive care unit/high dependency unit influenza admissions.”
The report also said that the rate of flu-like illness reported throughout primary care is also above normal levels for the first time this winter, with GPs in participating practices consulting 13 patients per 100,000 population with symptoms.
