Shrewsbury maternity scandal – inquiry to report on early findings
The initial findings and urgent recommendations from an inquiry into the biggest maternity scandal in the history of the NHS will be published next month.
The independent investigation into 1,862 cases and the scale of the care disaster at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust will deliver findings from a selection of 250 cases, including essential safety recommendations for the trust, which has faced increasing concerns over its quality of care and wider safety in the last 12 months.
In the last year, there have been a number of scandals at hospitals across England with the care regulator the Care Quality Commission warning that too many maternity units are unsafe and not doing enough to improve.
Donna Ockenden, midwifery expert, is leading the inquiry in the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, which is also facing a police investigation into multiple baby deaths and brain damaged children over several decades.
A leaked report revealed widespread failings at the trust, which led to over 50 children suffering permanent brain damage after being deprived of oxygen during the birth, as well as identifying 47 other cases of substandard care.
