COVID-19: Clinically Extremely Vulnerable will No Longer be Required to Shield

Government announced the shielding requirement for those considered clinically extremely vulnerable will no longer apply, and confirmed that they will not be advised to shield again in the future following expert clinical advice. The closure of the shielding programme follows a pause to shielding guidance in place since 1 April 2021.

The government website regarding the clinically extremely vulnerable has been updated to confirm that shielding has ended, and those in this category should continue to follow the general COVID-19 guidance on how to stay safe.

COVID-19: Legislation updated to make Self-Isolation a Legal Requirement until March 2022

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Self-Isolation) (England) (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 2021 (SI 2021/1073) came into force at 11.55 pm on 27 September 2021 and apply only in England. They extend the effect of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Self-Isolation) (England) Regulations 2020 (SI 2020/1045) (Self-isolation Regulations) until 24 March 2022.

The Regulations impose a legal requirement to self-isolate where an individual tests positive for COVID-19 or is an unvaccinated close contact of an individual who has tested positive.

In addition, the updated Regulations also clarify that a household contact will only be exempt from self-isolation due to being fully vaccinated if they are fully vaccinated at the date the household contact first developed symptoms, or, where the contact is asymptomatic, the date the contact took the test that led to the positive result.

Covid 19: End of Furlough Scheme leads Government to look ahead to Next Phase of ‘Plan for Jobs’ Support Package

The Chancellor announced the next phase of the Plan for Jobs, part of a £400 billion support package for the economy designed to support employers and workers after furlough ceased on 30 September 2021.

The Treasury figures show that up to the end of July 2021, 11.6 million jobs had been furloughed and 1.3 million employers benefitted from the scheme. The Chancellor announced that as furlough came to an end there were more than 1 million job vacancies. He emphasised that the Plan for Jobs is designed to support UK employers to create new jobs and ensure workers have appropriate skills for the jobs of the future.

Employers are encouraged to take advantage of the support on offer, including the Kickstart scheme and additional funding around apprenticeships.
